During the Second Intifada, (2000/ 2001), Gilo suffered well over 100 gun fire and mortar attacks. The attacks were launched from the adjacent neighborhood of Beit Jalla. Defensive operations were mounted by the IDF forces and concrete walls were put up to shield the neighborhood.
On the 15th of August this year, the IDF (Israel Defence Force), began the dismantling of these protective shields.
