A palace fortress built by Herod (37 - 4 BCE). Here Herod entertained and here he was buried.
The upper Herodian comprises of the fortress and of Herod's castle.
The lower Herodian is made up of a pool containing an island and an adjacent terraced garden, all of which are surrounded by auxiliary buildings, one of which is a Roman Bath house.
A hyperdrome (stadium), connects to this building.
